How bioethanol fireplaces work and how much heat they produce

Come funzionano i camini a bioetanolo e quanto scaldano

If we told you that there is avalid alternative to the traditional wood-burning fireplacethat maintains its aesthetic effect but which - unlike other solutions such as thepellet stoveor thewood stove- not It requires no installation work, no chimney, and it also frees you from the problem of supplying firewood, fumes in the house and constant ash removal? No, we're not crazy, it really exists:  we're talking about bioethanol fireplaces.

In this article, we'll explain  everything you need to know about bioethanol fireplaces: what they are, how they work, what fuel they use, how to use them, and how much heat they give.

Let's get started.

What are bioethanol fireplaces?

As the name suggests,  A bioethanol fireplace, also known as a biofireplace or ethanol fireplace, is a type of fireplace that uses bioethanol as fuel, generating a real flame.

Bioethanol is a  fuel made from denatured alcohol, of agricultural origin, derived from the  fermentation of cereals such as beets or sugar cane.

The fireplace is capable of creating real flames without, however, producing smoke, bad odors or dangerous chemicals. The bioethanol used for home heating is 94-95% distilled ethanol. This is precisely what helps avoid the unpleasant odors typical of other fuels. When burned, bioethanol releases only water vapor and carbon dioxide, in much lower concentrations than other fuels, with a positive impact on climate-altering emissions. Furthermore,  it does not produce substances harmful to humans such as fine dust (PM10) or other substances that could cause allergies.

The only precaution concerns  installation in a well-ventilated and sufficiently large room, following the same principle as a gas stove.

As mentioned,  they do not require any chimney, vent, or special flue, and  They can be installed practically anywhere, both on the wall and on the floor, taking care to keep them away from flammable products, such as curtains, fabrics, furniture, etc.

How does a bioethanol fireplace work? Bioethanol?

Simply put,  bioethanol fireplaces work similarly to a candle. We've explained that this home heating device  burns alcohol-based ethanol.

To make it work,  simply put a certain amount of this fuel in the burner and light it with a long lighter.

In many models, you can  control the size of the flame  by reducing the burner opening, while to turn it off, simply close it completely.

It is recommended to  wait for the burner to cool before adding bioethanol and relighting the flame. Generally, 10-15 minutes are sufficient.

How much heat do bioethanol fireplaces produce?

The heating capacity of a bioethanol fireplace is calculated in W/h per liter.

In general, a liter of bioethanol fuel lasts approximately 3 hours at the maximum setting, up to a maximum of 7-8 hours at the minimum setting, but this also depends greatly on the model.

On average, a liter of bioethanol for a fireplace ranges between €3 and €5.

Even though these fireplaces are generally small in size, Most models are wall-mounted and take up a space similar to that of a painting or a flat-screen TV. They heat the rooms they are in very well.

With the same flame,   the combustion of a bioethanol fireplace generates three times more heat than a traditional fireplace, for a very simple reason.

As explained,  ethanol fireplaces do not require the installation of a flue, which allows them to  avoid the dispersion of about 2/3 of the heat produced, as happens with traditional fireplaces,  achieving 100% of the energy produced released into the room.

3 reasons to choose a bioethanol fireplace Bioethanol

Why choose a bioethanol fireplace to install in your home? The main reasons are essentially the following 3:

  1. Aesthetics: Bioethanol fireplaces, both wall-mounted and floor-standing, are very beautiful to look at and manage to combine functionality with aesthetics, making them a perfect addition to your home decor;
  2. Practicality: These fireplaces are very easy to install; they don't require any masonry work, no connections need to be made, and you don't need a flue. They simply need to be hung on the wall or placed on the floor wherever you think is most useful;
  3. Quality Air: As explained, burning ethanol does not produce smoke, ash, or toxic substances, but only water vapor and carbon dioxide,  cleaning the air in the room where the fireplace is installed. In fact, simply ventilating the room a little will ensure the necessary air exchange.

It is not, of course, a definitive alternative to other forms of heating, but  it can be very useful for integrating independent systems, such as traditional radiators or gas radiators.
