Which air conditioner to choose: a quick guide

Quale climatizzatore scegliere: guida rapida

Deciding which air conditioner to choose is not easy, especially if you don't have a basic understanding of the various types of products available on the market today.

Not all air conditioners are the same, and buying one just because it's on sale or because the installer recommended a particular model could be a mistake, resulting in a waste of time, resources, and money.

There are many variables to consider, and  for every need There's a more or less suitable solution.

So, before you fall for the flyer offer at your local megastore or the promotion you saw online, it's probably a good idea to delve deeper into the topic and try to figure out which air conditioner to choose.

What does monosplit or multisplit air conditioner mean?

Let's start with the basics, namely the definition of monosplit and multisplit.

This is actually a very simple detail to understand, but it is very important to know.

As you know, an air conditioner is composed - with the exception of models without an external unit - of two main elements:

  • The external unit: Commonly called “motor”, is the bulkiest part that is installed outside the home, on the building's perimeter walls;
  • The internal unit: This is the one that, as the name suggests, we install in the home, and which we actually manage to supply cold or hot air.

The term split indicates the internal unit; therefore, we speak of a monosplit when we have only one internal unit (a split) connected to the respective external unit. A multisplit, on the other hand, involves the installation of two or more internal elements connected, however, to a single external unit.

In short, a single external motor controls more than one internal air conditioner, most often two.

In this case, we are talking about dual split, a solution usually used when you want to install one air conditioner in the bedroom and one in the living room, but avoiding having to attach two external units to the wall of the building, which is especially problematic in some contexts (condominiums, historic buildings, etc.).

But There are also trialsplits, quadrisplits, and pentasplits, which are rarely used in residential homes but are very common in commercial premises and offices.

Now let's see how many types of air conditioners are available on the market, and available, with various models, in our online store. Visit here the dedicated section.

1. Wall-mounted Air Conditioner

Air conditionerscan be placed in various points of the room, but the most common type is the wall-mounted model, which is installed on the upper part of a vertical wall, away from the ceiling.

In short,  the classic air conditioner that each of us thinks of or is familiar with.

They are usually installed near the corners, to avoid positioning them in the center of the room, which is unattractive from an aesthetic point of view.

2. Cassette Air Conditioners

Cassette air conditionersdiffer from wall-mounted air conditioners for three reasons: size, installation method, and intended use.

This is a type of air conditioner that is typically installed on the ceiling, but recessed into a false ceiling.

Invented for commercial and business users, cassette air conditioners have become popular over the years in the residential, especially in more modern homes with false ceilings, but still to a much lesser extent than traditional wall-mounted air conditioners.

They are larger than traditional air conditioners, but since they are installed inside a false ceiling, the visible part consists only of the grille from which the air flow comes out, resulting in minimal space.

As with wall-mounted air conditioners, data-mce-fragment="1"> Cassette units are also available in a multisplit version.

3. Floor-mounted Air Conditioner

The term “floor” could generate some confusion, leading the less knowledgeable user to believe that this type of air conditioner is installed under the floor, a bit like heating, but this is not the case.

By floor-mounted air conditioner we mean a device always installed on the wall vertical, but a short distance from the floor or resting on it.

Usually this type of air conditioner is recommended for homes with low or irregular ceilings, such as attics, for example. Furthermore, being within easy reach makes them easier to clean and prevent them from accumulating dust.

Some models can be  installed on both the floor and the ceiling, making them very flexible.

4. Ducted Air Conditioner

We continue our list by mentioning the so-called ducted air conditioners, a solution suitable for large spaces, such as factories or houses with large floor areas or spread over multiple floors, which could not be air-conditioned uniformly without installing a unit in each room.

How do they work?

One or more external units are installed to generate cool or warm air, which is then  transported to the various openings in the house through a ducted system, created by constructing false ceilings to accommodate the necessary pipes.

5. Air conditioners without an external unit

When talking about monosplit and multisplit air conditioners, we explained that the external unit is very important, but there are conditions in which it is not possible to install a motor on the outside of the building.

In particular, it may be prohibited by condominium rules or in historic buildings, subject to architectural and urban planning restrictionsimposed by their municipality.

This does not mean, of course, that residents of these buildings do not have the right or the possibility of installing a device for cold and/or hot air, because they can opt for an air conditioner without an external unit.

How does it work? Having to do without the external motor, it is integrated into the internal split unit, albeit in a smaller and less noisy version. To install it, however, you need to drill two holes in the perimeter wall on which it is installed to allow heat exchange.

Portable air conditioners also work the same way. You can find them here.
