Be very wary of anyone who tells you that vacuum is not needed, or even worse, anyone who tells you that vacuum is achieved by "venting the pipes" with the gas contained in the external unit!!!
This improvised way of creating a vacuum does not in any way guarantee that traces of water will be eliminated from the circuit as any drops of water end up mixed together with the refrigerant gas contaminating the entire circuit!
